Texture is about the tactile surface of a painting. It can be real or implied, added and subtracted, accidental or carefully orchestrated. Different textures have the power to enrich and enhance a painting because they stimulate our sense of touch, thereby creating an added layer of experience for the viewer AND the artist! As you build and remove layers, you also build a sense of ‘history’ into your work.
This class will explore textural techniques in paint application and brush handling, in combination with a variety of other media, including collage materials, graphite, crayon, ink etc. It is suitable for all levels however, the main requirement is a sense of exploration and play, because often the most exciting textures happen by accident! This class will also enable students to deepen their understanding of the key elements of composition, contrast, and colour.
