Our experienced instructors are known for their generosity, knowledge, and willingness to help others. Beginners and intermediate artists are welcome. Programs cover a wide range of media such as watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel, drawing, printmaking and Specialty topics include portrait, figure and landscape painting or drawing.

Acrylics-Experimenting w/Landscape
This class runs from Sept. 20th until Nov. 15th, on Friday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:30 pm (8 classes, no class Oct 11th). If this class is full, you may phone us at 306 653 1900 to add your name to a wait list.
In this course, students will introduced to a range of styles and experimental approaches to landscape painting using acrylics, acrylic medium, ink and mixed media. We will explore a variety of acrylic methods with a focus on landscape, organic forms from nature and related abstracted experimental compositions. We will examine methods for creating studies of skies, clouds, and various depictions of the land, trees, and skies. Diverse methods of experimenting with acrylic, mixed media along with perspective and colour theory will be explored. Exemplars of well-known Canadian and International landscape painters will be discussed.

Figure drawing classes are essential for any artist wanting to understand the human form. In this class, we will work with nude models and cover everything from skin to skeleton. We will work to develop the skills to analyze what we see when we look at the figure and render it accordingly. The class is open to all adult students and can benefit all skill levels from beginners to experts.

Intro to Drawing with Jean Dudley

Learning to draw is all about learning to see while having fun. This introductory course will focus on increasing your observational skills and interpreting those observations from your perspective. Still life arrangements will be used as particular drawing skills are practiced and a range of mark-making techniques are developed. Topics covered in this class include line drawing, contour, gesture, value, form, negative space, and perspective. Other topics will be included as individual interest and time permits.

Intro to Soft Pastels, D. McTavish $210.00

This class is an introduction to soft pastels where students will learn and explore materials, tools, mark-making, and composition, practice their observational skills, plan paintings through notes and colour thumbnails, and use different pastel techniques to bring their paintings to life. Students will work from a still life which is challenging, but attainable, for all skill levels and lends itself nicely to soft pastels. Some drawing experience is recommended.

Landscape Painting, A Montgomery $210.00

In this introduction to landscape painting, students with some experience with the watercolor medium will create several paintings. In the process of learning about landscape elements, students will also explore the concept of working en plein air, review colour theory, and practice elements of composition including cropping, creating a focal point, and working with natural light. Each class will feature critique. discussion and demonstration.
This class is also suitable for other mediums such as acrylic or mixed media.

Nativating Abstraction, K. Ennis
This class will run from October 24th to November 21st (5 classes) on Thursday afternoons at 12:30 pm-3:30 pm. If this class is full, you may phone us at 306 653 1900 to add your name to the waitlist.
This class will emphasize an intuitive approach to decision making with minimal analysis. “Try it and see what happens” will be our operating instructions. Suggestions will be made regarding tools, materials, techniques, and content based on the students’ efforts. The work will be looked at as a group when in progress, trying to understand what has been done rather than making evaluative judgements. A courageous attitude is recommended (and can be developed). Painters at any level of experience may benefit and are welcome.

Open Studio Monday D.Lindner
This class runs Monday September 16th to November 18th (8 classes – no class October 14th and November 11th), Monday evenings from 7:00pm – 9:30pm. If this class is full, you may phone us at 306 653 1900 to add your name to a wait list.
This class is designed for people with some painting experience. There will be a still-life set up for those who are interested, but class members may also work from their own imagination, or their own photographs. There will be discussions about colour theory and all the principles of art and design as the class progresses. Degen offers encouragement and practical information, and makes suggestions about the paintings being created.

Relief Printmaking with P.Bulas
This class runs from Sept. 18th – November 6th, Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:00pm (8 classes). If this class is full, you may phone us at 306 653 1900 to add your name to a wait list.
Relief printing is one of the oldest and most straightforward forms of printmaking. A printing block is created by cutting away everything that is not to be printed and then the remaining surface is inked and printed through pressure onto paper. Unlike other printmaking mediums, relief printing can be done all by hand, eliminating the need for expensive equipment.
In this class, students will learn how to carve linoleum and wood blocks and then print them by hand. Students will be instructed on how to print in black & white as well as in colour. Other related printmaking techniques covered in the class include chine-collé printing on textiles, and drypoint. At the end of the class, students will have the opportunity to participate in a print exchange with each other and the instructor.

This course builds on skills and techniques introduced in Introduction to Watercolour. The course will begin with a still life set-up to review concepts of drawing, composition and light source, colour mixing and brush techniques on paper. Continuing on, you will be encouraged to pursue your own work and explore other ideas such as using resists, mixed media ideas, or painting on canvas using absorbent ground.
