Mixing Palette: plastic hinged or open palette – approx. 9 x11. HERE.

50% of learning to paint is in the supplies you use. If you use inferior grade products expect inferior results with your painting.
PAINTS
Here is a list of the least expensive colours that make the most mixes and are my current favourites for outdoor painting:
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Yellow Deep
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Orange
Perylene Maroon

Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Rose Ultramarine Blue

Titanium White
Try to use artist grade paints (Gamblin, M. Graham etc.) PLEASE no student grade and definitely no craft paints.
Thinner or oms (odorless mineral sprits)
BRUSHES
NO Dollar Store brushes.
****For Oil:****
Bring good quality bristle brushes. Sizes 2,4,6,8,10, Flats.
1- 3” cheap big hog bristle brush for blending. #1 or 2 Taklon liner brush
Small amount of cotton swabs, kept in a ziploc bag.
⠀ ****For Acrylic:****
Same as oil, but synthetic bristles are okay – Rosemary brand are great.
Also a 1-inch synthetic soft flat brush (Heinz Jordan or Silver brands are good) for glazing.
****For Gouache:****
3/4” flat, #6 round and #2 round
#1 or #2 liner brush.

BRUSH WASHER
****Oil:****
A good metal leak proof brush washer is a very good item to invest in. You will thank us for it. ⠀****Acrylic, Gouache and Watercolour:****
Yogurt containers with a kitchen scratchy (this is a must if you want clean brushes) in the
bottom.

MEDIUMS:
****Oil:**** Liquin or solvent free gel.
Acrylic
Retarder medium for acrylic is a must if you’re an outdoor acrylic painter. Acrylic dries very fast when it’s hot and windy.
⠀CANVAS
8- 8×10 canvas boards 4- 9×12 canvas boards.
Palette or palette paper, strip off sheets. the bigger the better.
EASEL
A good quality outdoor pochade or plein air easel will be a necessity.

I would request that everyone have at newsprint at least 24 x 30

Bulldog clips or masking tape for holding the paper on the board
A few sheets of better quality drawing paper.
I would encourage people to bring whatever other materials they want to use including pastels or paint depending on their level of experience and comfort.

This is the supply list for Understanding Oil instructed by Aarin Rinas.
Supply list
Brushes- oil brushes, variety of sizes and shapes, the more the better.
Good Quality Oil Paint from companies including Gamblin; Kama; Williamsburg; Winsor Newton (NOT the water soluble oils)
Colours include- Titanium white; Burnt sienna; Ultramarine blue; Cobalt blue; Cadmium red medium; Anthraquinone red or Alizarin crimson; India yellow (recommend KAMA); Cadmium yellow light
Odourless mineral spirits- Gamsol
Jar with lid (recommend jar with brush cleaning screen available at Hues)
Painting surface- canvas pad (recommend Fredrix 12×16)

For the first class you need the following:
Paint; brushes; miscellaneous supplies and at least
1 sheet of 65 lb paper or heavier and another surface to do exercises
- My preference is for you to buy primed canvas off the roll. Buy 2.5
feet. You may choose to do all your work on unstretched primed canvas.
Paints you need a total of 5 paint colours – red; blue; yellow; white and burnt
Umber. You can but more paints as the class progresses to supplement these choices.
Choose one of the following sets
Traditional – Naphthol red; Ultramarine blue; Cadmium yellow middle or medium
Titanium white; Burnt umber
OR
Modern Colours – Quinacridone Magenta; Phthalo Blue Green Shade; Hansa Yellow Lt; Titanium White and Burnt Umber
Required miscellaneous items include
Brushes – Size 4 and Size 8 bright Snap by Princeton. These brushes have a square shape.
Palette knife
Paper towels; rags
2b pencil or vine charcoal
Palette – 1 of the following – disposable palette paper or plastic lids. Yogurt or ice
Cream lids work the best if the lid is white.

Surfaces to choose from include
Unstretched primed canvas – 2′ x 5′ – can be cut with scissors and used for exercises
and completed paintings.
80 lb. paper – cheap but needs prep and only good for practice pieces. Ripples when wet.
140 lb. watercolour paper can used without prep for exercises. Keeps shape but
expensive to frame.
Canvas Pad – needs no prep but only works for exercise.
2 stretched canvases minimum size 11″ x14″
10 sheets of bond/copy paper 81/2″ x 11 for thumb nail sketches and planning
compositions.

Relief Printing Supply list P Bulas
Students don’t need to buy all the supplies for the first class. Supplies will be discussed in the first class.
Paper Lynx Cover is a good inexpensive paper to start with. Students will be shown different types of paper to try.
-Linoleum blocks
Smaller sizes recommended 5” x 7 or 4” x 6” are good sizes to start with
-Small wood blocks will be provided by the instructor
-Carving tools are optional-there will be carving tool sets available for students to use.
-A sheet of mylar for printing
-Wooden spoon for printing -Wax paper
For printing and for interleafing in between prints -A basic set of inks will be provided for students.
-Sketch pad/notebook
Nothing expensive just for sketches and taking notes
-Pencils or pens for taking notes and sketching
-Ruler for measuring paper and setting up registration for printing
-A box of nitrile or latex gloves
We will be using water based inks that clean up with soap and water. It is highly recommended to use gloves to keep your hands and workspace clean.
-An apron, smock or old shirt to wear while printing.
-A container to carry your supplies is recommended.
-A simple cardboard portfolio is recommended to transport your prints and paper.
