Artist Notes: Applied in many thin layers an underpainting done in Vivianite adds enormous depth and luminosity to watercolours. Vivianite is granular and lifts easily so light applications in layers work best.

Paint Maker’s Notes: Vivianite has been used as a pigment since antiquity and is also known as Blue Ocher. This grey-blue mineral was christened ‘Vivianite’ after Welshman John Henry Vivian discovered it in Cornwall, England. Vivianite is often found in peat bogs, where it grows on (and will eventually replace) the bones and teeth of animals (or humans) found within.
