Randi Lalonde

Randi Lalonde is a multimedia artist in NE Saskatchewan. She has taken classes through the University of Saskatchewan and various private workshops and classes. In 2007, Randi enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan’s painting class and attended the summer camp for artists at Kenderdine Campus, Emma Lake. It was here that she was introduced to plein air painting, which merged two things that she loves the most - enjoying nature and creating art.

The scope of her work includes portraiture, still life, landscape and abstraction in a multitude of media. But throughout it all there is a common thread. It is connection with the experience and connection with the subject as she creates that remains constant. She is interested in the process and translating what she is deeply seeing. Her focus is on shapes, values and colours of the subject she is portraying.“To see is to forget the name of the thing one sees” is a quote attributed to poet Paul Valery (also attributed to artists Claude Monet and Robert Irwin). The quote is very fitting for Randi’s artistic approach. Her work depicts shapes rather than tightly worked details, and an overall sense of place and space.

FORGET THE NAME OF THINGS is an exhibition of plein air paintings and related works created from plein air sketches. In this show, Randi renders the subject of landscape through integrating abstract shapes, value and colours as she sees them. The works are a translation of the sensory experiences from painting in nature as the light and weather change quickly. The connection and energy of the day result in an abstracted artistic note-taking in paint.
