xTravel Sketching&Ink Class P. Katz

As we reflect on the past decade of fostering creativity within our community, we are thrilled to embark on a year-long celebration of workshops led by professional Saskatchewan artists who have contributed immensely to our artistic landscape.

This one day workshop is on March 23rd, Saturday from 10:30am – 3:30pm. If this class is full, you may phone us at 306 653 1900 to add your name to a wait list.

Over the last couple of decades, Patricia Katz’s pens, paints, and sketchbooks have traveled with her everywhere she goes. This session is for those of you who dream of doing the same – and long to build artmaking into your own travel adventures.

You’ll learn to:

  • Get your sketches off the ground and down on paper when time is limited
  • Add splashes of color that bring your sketches to life
  • Build your confidence by starting with small vignettes
  • Zero in on manageable compositions when there is a world of choice in front of you
  • Select portable tools and supplies for sketching on the go
  • Keep yourself safe and comfortable on location

This will be a see and try experience, so expect to draw and paint along in ink and watercolor as you explore the ins and outs of travel sketching. The session is designed for those who already have some basic experience with watercolor.

Recommended Supplies List

(Note: Be sure to bring a bag lunch to enjoy mid-day

while we hold an informal Q & A session over the lunch break)

Watercolor Paper

One 22×30” sheet of  Arches or Fabriano 140 lb Cold Press Cut into nine pieces approx. 7” x 10” in size.

Watercolor Brushes

  • A couple of round WC brushes ranging in size from #6 to #12
  • A half inch to one inch flat WC brush

Watercolor Paints

The better the paints, the better the results. Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith and QOR are all excellent brands. For what we will be doing it will be much easier to work with freshly squeezed out tube paints rather than pre-formed dry pans of pigments.

These are my favorite basic pigments.

  • Hansa Yellow Medium
  • Quinacridone Gold
  • Scarlett Lake
  • Permanent Alizarin Crimson
  • Cobalt Blue
  • French Ultramarine Blue

Often Used Additional Colors:

  • Quinacridone Burnt Orange
  • Raw Sienna
  • Serpentine Green
  • Sap Green

Pens

  • A couple of sizes of waterproof permanent Black Ink Pens – size 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 will give you quite a bit of variety (Copic Multiliner, Micron Pigma, Faber Castell, and Mitsubishi UniPin Fine Line are all good brands)

Other Supplies

  • Palette – If you already have a palette, use that. If you are wanting to keep it simple to start, a plain flat white plate (10” or so) would work to squeeze paint on and use for a palette. If you are starting from scratch and want to invest in a palette you can use in your studio and also on the go, the Heritage 18 well paint palette is versatile.
  • Support Board – on which you will tape your wc paper. Masonite panel or firm corrugated plastic or coroplast or plexiglass. Choose a size that’s a couple of inches larger in each direction than the paper you plan to use (i.e. – 10” x 12” or bigger)
  • Pencil (mechanical 0.5 or regular HB pencil)
  • A kneaded eraser
  • Small spray bottle for water (Approximately 3-5” tall version is great – must be one that sprays a very fine mist)
  • Water containers ( two 500 ml sour cream containers will work just fine )
  • Roll of paper towel
  • Box of Kleenex (tissues without any lotion in them)
  • Masking tape (3/4” – 1” width) to use to tape wc paper to backing board

Be sure to bring a sense of curiosity

& a spirit of discovery!

I’m looking forward to a fun session!

Hope you are, too.

See you soon, Pat
